Alberta is not treated unfairly by Ottawa.

For a few decades now, many in Alberta say that the province is treated badly by Ottawa, that we give more than we get back. 

Let's break this down. 

Every Canadian, coast to coast, pays the same rate of federal income taxes. That money goes to Ottawa to do as they want. In exchange, they divide that money up as provinces have needs, for things like health care and education. Some provinces are rich and have high incomes (Alberta) and some provinces need help people they don't have a booming economy, or less of a booming economy. 

Yes, Alberta has been a net helper to the country. People living in Alberta are better off than the rest of the country, that is a fact. They make higher wages, and pay higher taxes. 

So what do these separatists and (mainly conservatives) want? 

Like a bunch of babies, they want it ALL for themselves. They are like spoiled lottery winners who do not want to help anyone out, even though they were given the lottery ticket by Canada. Alberta would not have grown its oil without investments from the Government of Canada. That is a fact. The Government of Canada WANTS Alberta to do well. 

If Alberta wants "a better deal", they can start looking at themselves. The oil companies have the Alberta provincial government by the tail. The Alberta government is basically owned by corporations, not people. We saw that recently when they settled for hundreds of millions with coal companies over a lawsuit they should have fought. While under funding education for our kids, and cutting out snacks for kids getting cancer treatment due to "food waste".  

This province needs to start charging a fair royalty for its oil and it needs to stop giving hundreds of millions in royalty credits out to these companies to clean up the messes they are responsible for. Alberta is a mess of old oil wells and waste that these companies are ignoring. Again, our provincial politicians are bought off by corporations. The people here do not matter. 

But back to the claims that Ottawa doesn't treat Alberta right. First of all, those federal taxes Ottawa collects....they could put it all to the debt, they do not have to give back a penny. But they do. Billions have come back to Alberta. They provide military protection, they build pipelines, they provide regulatory services for all sorts of things like Transport Canada to Air traffic control. Alberta is protected by NORAD, we have open borders to the rest of the country and our national parks are first class. Without Canada, who knows what Alberta would look like? I imagine our national parks would be mined. 

And speaking of pipelines.....Alberta wants more of them to the United States for one reason....to ship our water down there. northern Alberta has tons of water, and the USA wants it because they are running out. The next thing Alberta will sell off, is its water. It is already happening water from the mountains near St. Mary's Reservoir south of the border. 

It is time for Alberta to stop blaming Ottawa for its (imagined) problems and stop selling out its resources.
